Short story: When she discovers a burglar in the house, nine-year-old Editha persuades the thief to not awaken or harm her mother. The courageous girl even requests the burglar takes her own possessions instead of those belonging to her father.

***This story was inspired by a little 8 year old girl named Elsie Leslie Lyde, who is considered America’s first child star (actress). The original book contains a photograph of Elsie, and a letter she wrote in 1888 to the the publisher giving permission for her picture to be in the book.

“Lor’ no, miss,” he said, “by no manner o’ means. I’m a dear friend o’ yer Par’s, come to make a evenin’ call, an’ not a wishin’ to trouble the servants, I stepped in through the winder.”

“Ah!” said Editha, looking very gravely at him; “I see you are joking with me, as papa does sometimes.”
